Flash Video On It’s Way Out!

As you may know there is a battle being waged on the front lines of Internet video content delivery. Adobe flash has been the primary method for displaying video's online. Here is the quick rundown... In order to see most online video your web browser needs to install a plugin (which you most like did the day your browser was installed). Without the plugin you see the dreaded notice box telling you that you need adobe flash to view the content. 201005011213.jpg One of the challenges Adobe Flash has faced is that it does not play nicely on mobile devices. It can create problems that crash the operation system of the device and it can a horrible strain on battery life. Recently Apple announced that it has no plans for supporting Adobe Flash on any any of its mobile devices. Primarily the iPhone and the iPad. This has come as a major blow to Adobe and will likely mean the death of Flash. The good news is that HTML5 will have native support for video which means that a plugin will not be needed. Which is why Apple suggests that HTML5 is the future and Flash is not. If you would like to see an example of an HTML5 video player, Jilion has a demo up on their website which can be found at http://jilion.com/sublime/video. The player is expected to be released soon and will have many notable features such as:
  • No need for a browser plugin
  • Jump anywhere in the video and it will buffer from that point
  • Uniform Interface across all browsers
  • Several fullscreen features a resizing capability
  • iPad & iPhone support
The bottom line is that flash is a temperamental and bulky browser add-on that consumes resources, and a better solution is at hand. HTML5 is the future as it will provide a more streamlined video viewing experience across all devices and all browsers.
